UNESCO and the Year 2000 What is UNESCO? The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations System. Its purpose is to promote collaboration in education, science and culture to further universal respect for justice, for the rule of law and for the human rights and fundamental freedoms. It was started right after World War II, with 20 states and it now has 186 member states. More information: Year 2000 : The International Year for the Culture of Peace The International Year for the Culture of Peace, the year 2000 declared by the United Nations General Assembly, is the event of the millenium where every one has a role to play. The celebration starts at the end of 1998, with activities to promote cultural diversity, tolerance, dialogue and reconciliation world-wide. UNESCO, a member of the UN family with a consitutional mandate to "build the defences of peace in the minds of men", has a leadership role in the UN system for co-ordinating these activities.
